TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's Central Bank has released a limited edition of 45,000 sets of dragon year zodiac commemorative coins placed on sale at the Bank of Taiwan's counters starting Monday (Jan. 22).
Despite dipping temperatures, queues began to form as early as 4 a.m. at the Bank of Taiwan on Chongqing South Road in Taipei's Zhongzheng District, with over 150 people lining up early.
Under the rules of in-person sales, each buyer can purchase only two sets of the Dragon Year coins per turn. If more purchases are desired, one must rejoin the line.
In addition to the counter sales, the online pre-order, which started at 10 a.m. on Jan. 8, allocated 45,000 sets and was sold out within just 3 hours.
The price set for a set of Dragon Year coins originally was NT$1,900, but due to their popularity, the resale price online has surged to NT$3,000.
