TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Ministry of National Defense (MND) announced on Tuesday (Jan. 16) that during their sixth week of training, new draftees can apply for specialist positions based on skills and certifications held. Alternatively, they can also voluntarily serve in the main combat units.
Draftees who choose not to participate in the expertise selection will implement unit choice in the seventh week. The number of guard units available for selection will be made public on a signboard. Draftees will draw lots to determine the selection order and then choose their service unit in order.
The MND plans to draft 9,127 men in 2024, with the army taking care of the training for 7,514 of them. The recruits will be trained in five units based on their household registration, with 12 echelons in total.
According to the MND, after their training, the conscripted men will be distributed to guard units on the home or outer islands closest to their registered residence, or they may choose to serve in the primary combat unit according to their willingness.
The first batch will begin training on Jan. 25, with the army recruiting 670 men, the MND said.
The training, conducted by the 206th Brigade in Northern Taiwan, the 302nd Brigade in the Central region, and the 203rd Brigade in the South, is expected to last eight weeks.
