TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's Ministry of Agriculture has begun recruiting four dog handlers for its Animal and Plant Health Inspection Agency, according to a statement on Thursday (Jan. 4).
Recruiting until Jan. 31, 2024, the handler positions' salary starts at NT$37,769 per month, with island outstations attracting an additional NT$7,700 allowance.
The role requires availability for shifts, business travel, and at least one year of related experience, including part-time work.
Hsieh Wen-chu, a representative from the Taiwan Animal and Plant Disease Control Inspection and Testing Development Association, said that suitable handlers are required to have a good understanding of dogs, an outgoing personality, and the ability to work independently.
She stated that in 2024, there will be 43 handlers cooperating with the 56 dogs, with some handlers overseeing two dogs.
Due to the handlers' roles within international ports and airports, basic English conversation skills are necessary. A driver's license and driving experience are also required, as handlers could be responsible for transporting the dogs in official vehicles.
The positions on offer are split across Taiwan's airports and seaports — one at Taipei Songshan Airport, two at Taoyuan International Airport, and one at Kinmen Shuitou Pier.
Depending on the agency's operational needs, relocation to Kaohsiung Airport or Taichung Airport may be needed, the statement added.
