TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan People's Party (TPP) presidential candidate Ko Wen-je took a firm stance on cross-strait relations during Saturday's (Dec. 30) debates, , advocating for preparation and capability in defense, yet emphasizing a desire for peace and not war.

Ko stressed the importance of Taiwan's autonomy and peaceful relations with its neighbors. He expressed concerns over the island's internal social and political discord, and the increasing tensions in the Taiwan Strait, questioning the prevailing environment of secrecy and division.

Contrasting with foreign media's depiction of Taiwan as a dangerous place, Ko envisions the island as a beacon of beauty and a mediator in Sino-American relations, rather than a pawn in their conflicts.

Addressing domestic challenges, Ko acknowledged the significance of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), Taiwan's semiconductor giant, while advocating for a balanced approach to nuclear energy and environmental sustainability. He highlighted the global trend towards net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Ko called for transcending traditional ideological divides in Taiwan, pledging to implement long-term plans focused on fairness, inclusivity, and effective governance.
