TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Following a surprise demonstration by Greenpeace demanding a 40% renewable energy target by 2030, TPP spokeswoman Tai Yu-wen stated on Wednesday (Dec. 20) that a return to a pragmatic approach is necessary concerning the energy mix policy.

Greenpeace had raided the campaign headquarters of various presidential candidates, including those of the TPP, pushing for a substantial increase in Taiwan's renewable energy usage by the end of the decade.

Tai remarked that the country's energy strategy should be pragmatic, rational, scientifically based, and focused on a just energy transformation and sustainable development.

Elaborating on the TPP's stance regarding Taiwan's energy future, he cited presidential candidate Ko Wen-je's proposed energy mix of 45% natural gas, 30% renewables, 15% coal, and 10% nuclear power by 2030.

Tai stressed the importance of developing renewable energy sources while also maintaining justice in the energy transition. He highlighted that decarbonization and moving away from fossil fuels are global trends, and Taiwan should develop its energy and electricity policies accordingly.

Tai spoke of making zero-carbon industries a strategic plan in Taiwan's ten-year vision. Additionally, the TPP encourages enterprises to use green power and supports "community renewable energy projects," enhancing the development of electric vehicles, and improving both public and private charging infrastructure.

Tai expressed hopes that by 2030, Taiwan would achieve ambitious goals, including a 100% electrification rate for public buses, a 30% market share for electric cars, and 35% for electric scooters.
