TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Premier Chen Chien-jen expressed regret Tuesday (Dec. 19) over China's characterization of Taiwan's trade restrictions as trade barriers. Amid escalating tensions, Chen highlighted the importance of addressing such conflicts through the World Trade Organization's (WTO) mechanisms.
Chen remarked that as members of the WTO, everyone should resort to consultations within its framework rather than political manipulation, urging for a peaceful and equal approach to cross-strait exchanges.
He reassured that Taiwan and China are always able to negotiate through the WTO.
On a separate note, Chen also addressed the recent earthquake in China's Gansu province, which resulted in numerous casualties. He extended his deepest condolences to the families of the victims and wished for a swift recovery for those injured.
Taiwan expressed willingness to assist with the earthquake relief efforts if needed.
"Our thoughts are with the affected communities; we pray for their quick recovery and the prompt restoration of everyday life in the region," Chen said.
