TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Kuomintang (KMT) presidential candidate Hou Yu-ih announced on Tuesday (Dec. 12) an expansion of childcare policies, promising free after-school care for elementary students aged 6 to 12, in addition to existing support for children up to age 6.

Hou's initiative aims to double the capacity of after-school care in public elementary schools from 180,000 to 360,000 children, with a focus on rural and disadvantaged areas.

Public elementary schools will also establish after-school programs to meet 100% of demand, reaching OECD standards. Extended care until 7 p.m. will be available during school terms and vacations.

The policy, guided by the "Three Safeties" principle, aims for parental peace of mind, child safety, and stability. Private sector involvement will increase, creating job opportunities.

Benefits include services for 300,000 families, including 80,000 disadvantaged families, job creation, and support for private institutions.
