TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The New Taipei City Department of Transportation is working to enhance at least 150 yellow-line parking sections by the end of February 2024, aiming to ease congested roadside parking.

Following the Ministry of Transportation and Communications' (MOTC) provisional ordinance on Nov. 9, which suspended the demerit point system for illegal parking due to a shortage of temporary parking spaces, municipalities are increasing yellow line and reserved parking designations.

By late November, over 60 red-to-yellow line conversions were completed, focusing on areas near MRT stations, hospitals, schools, taxi infraction hotspots, and high-demand temporary parking zones.

These changes ensure a minimum lane width of 5 meters, avoiding intersections, bus stops, and fire hydrants. The department is examining streets wider than 20 meters for further improvements.

Yellow-lined streets restrict parking from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., permitting only brief stops for drop-offs, pickups, or loading.

The MOTC's guidelines call for at least 10% of every 100 to 150-meter stretch of red-lined roadside to be used for temporary parking. Until this goal is reached, parking offenders will face fines between NT$300 and NT$600, but won't accumulate demerit points.
