TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan has emerged as the world's top-searched destination, recording an astounding 2,786% annual increase in traveler interest.
A prominent Japanese travel agency's rankings reveal Taipei's leap from seventh to second among the most popular destinations during the New Year period for 2023.
Data from January to October 2023 shows nearly 4 million tourists visited Taiwan, mainly from Asia, followed by the Americas and Europe.
International visitors highly value Taipei's travel affordability in airfare and accommodations, favorably comparing it to Japan and South Korea, and commend the local hospitality.
Taipei 101 and its vicinity have added new photo spots and light decorations to enhance this surge, expected to draw approximately 5 million visitors by March 2024.
Retail and leisure centers are also improving tourist experiences. SOGO department store unveiled a 6-meter-tall Olaf from "Frozen" for the holiday season, while BELLAVITA showcased a 3.5-meter-tall pure white Christmas tree.
Taipei's diverse cuisine, historical sites, cultural attractions, and warm interactions are major draws. The city particularly appeals to Japanese tourists with its night market food and hot spring resorts.
Travel experts suggest that as alternative tourism grows — focusing on similar but more economical experiences — Taiwan will continue attracting international tourists seeking quality at a better price.
