Taiwan's MOE reforms fitness tests for students (TVBS News)

TAIPEI (TVBS News) — In a significant reform to student fitness assessments, the Sports Administration under the Ministry of Education (MOE) announced Wednesday (Nov. 22) that sit-ups will be replaced with curl-ups, a move aimed at enhancing the safety and comprehensiveness of physical evaluations for students.

Starting from Aug. 1, 2024, the new assessments will also be included as an option for testing cardiovascular endurance, reflecting a shift towards diverse and internationally trending methods of heart, strength, and muscular endurance evaluations.

The Sports Administration released revisions to the national physical fitness test regulations, which are tailored for students aged 10 to under 23 years old. The new curl-up test not only increases safety but is also designed to provide a more holistic assessment of an individual's physical abilities.

With this reform, instructors have the flexibility to select the testing methods based on environmental conditions and weather, ensuring that fitness assessments can be conducted in various settings without compromising the safety or accuracy of the results.

In line with international standards, these changes by the Sports Administration aim to foster more robust and health-conscious youth, preparing them for a lifetime of physical well-being.
