WASHINGTON (TVBS News) — Representative to the United States Hsiao Bi-khim on Saturday (Nov. 11), due to poor health, suddenly missed an overseas community event amid rumors that she plans to return to Taiwan for a possible election campaign.

The Taiwanese Association of America Greater Washington Chapter held a Thanksgiving dinner in Maryland on Saturday, during which Hsiao originally intended to attend with American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) Chair Laura Rosenberger.

However, Hsiao cited discomfort due to a recent booster dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, and had Deputy Representative to the US Cheng Jung-chun participated on her behalf.

Speculation has been rife in the media that Hsiao may return to Taiwan, after handling the APEC summit in San Francisco, to become Democratic Progressive Party presidential candidate Lai Ching-te's running mate in the 2024 presidential election.

In response to whether Hsiao was being considered for the vice presidency, Lai on Thursday was tight-lipped, only revealing that the consideration for a suitable candidate was almost done, but an announcement would be made when appropriate.

The Central Election Commission has scheduled the presidential election registration from Nov. 20 to 24.
