TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Kaohsiung school meals rely solely on domestically produced eggs, Mayor Chen Chi-mai said on Tuesday, (Nov. 7), eliminating concerns of imported egg use.
Two egg producers, Tai Nong Egg Products and Sin Sing Eggs, came under heavy fines and legal scrutiny from the city government, as the companies' refusal to provide import and export documents has led to uncertainty regarding the distribution of 4.25 million eggs.
The ongoing issue led to a special inquiry report on egg imports in Kaohsiung being put forth in the city council. Mayor Chen, along with officials from the Department of Health and the Agriculture Bureau, attended the discussion.
Mayor Chen elaborated that Tai Nong and Sin Sing have both been penalized heavily by the city government, with cumulative fines reaching NT$11.3 million.
