TAIPEI (TVBS News) — American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) Director Sandra Oudkirk said on Sunday (Oct. 1) that the U.S. is committed to maintaining the One China policy, highlighting numerous benefits of maintaining the status quo.
When asked about the possibility of formal U.S.-Taiwan ties, Oudkirk remarked that the status quo helps secure "peace, stability, and prosperity not just in Taiwan, but throughout the region" and emphasized that such strategy has ensured Taiwan's economic growth over the decades.
During the online interview with commentator Huang Wei-han, Oudkirk also commented on the issue of Taiwan's presidential candidates. She explained that the U.S. stands neutral with regard to Taiwanese politics and expressed confidence in all three presidential candidates as professional politicians capable of governing and fulfilling the responsibilities of office.
Ensuring Taiwan's self-defense capabilities against regional threats, Oudkirk added, is another key aspect of U.S. support for the island.
