TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Hsieh Su-wei of Taiwan and Barbora Strycova from the Czech Republic clinched their second Wimbledon doubles title as a team by defeating Elise Mertens from Belgium and Storm Hunter from Australia with a score of 7-5, 6-4 on Sunday (July 16) on Centre Court.
In the final game of the second set, Hsieh capitalized on their second match point with a backhand shot, leading to a crucial break. Strycova, who returned this year after giving birth to a son, said this could be her last Wimbledon tournament. Their victory at Wimbledon in 2019, and now again three years later, demonstrates their remarkable skills and partnership as a formidable duo.
Hsieh has claimed the women's doubles title in her last three appearances at the grass-court Grand Slam tournament. In 2021, she also partnered with Mertens to lift the trophy. The 2020 edition of Wimbledon was canceled due to the pandemic, and Hsieh was injured in 2022.
Additionally, this victory marks Hsieh's second consecutive Grand Slam title, following her triumph with Wang Xinyu of China at the French Open doubles tournament in June.
Both Hsieh and Strycova, at 37, surpass the record previously set by Liezel Huber and Lisa Raymond, who were 35 and 38, respectively, when they won the U.S. Open in 2021. This makes Hsieh and Strycova the oldest women's doubles pair by combined age to reach a Grand Slam final.
While Elise Mertens aimed for her fourth overall Grand Slam title, Storm Hunter was vying for her first.
