TAICHUNG (TVBS News) — A TVBS reporter has uncovered a concerning issue at Taichung Civic Square, where numerous balloon vendors illegally sell hydrogen-filled balloons. This dangerous practice is putting thousands of visitors to the park at risk of explosions.
During weekends, around a dozen to twenty mobile balloon vendors gather at the square, and the thousands of people visiting the park are unaware of the hidden danger that comes with these colorful floating balloons.
Hydrogen, which is used to fill the balloons, is a highly flammable and hazardous gas that can cause instant explosions when exposed to fire. The Ministry of Economic Affairs has explicitly stated that filling balloons with hydrogen gas is forbidden. Balloons should be filled with helium gas, which is not explosive when near fire.
Despite the safety regulations, many vendors have chosen to use hydrogen because it is much cheaper. A hydrogen tank only costs between NT$500 to NT$1,000, while the same amount of helium costs NT$10,000. Unfortunately, this choice has put the lives of park visitors in danger.
To conceal the red-colored hydrogen tanks, the vendors have covered them with fabric. This practice is illegal and poses a significant threat to public safety.
The TVBS reporter's investigation has highlighted a serious safety concern at Taichung Civic Square. The public is urged to be aware of this issue and avoid purchasing hydrogen-filled balloons to prevent accidents.
