TAIPEI (TVBS News) - An increasing number of parents in Taiwan choose private school education instead of the public one. According to statistics from the Ministry of Education, the proportion of private and public students in junior and senior high schools around the country reached a new high of nearly 15% last year, and in some counties and cities, the percentage even reached 30%.
If we look at students in private junior high schools, the percentage has increased steadily to 14.4% in 2021, up from 9.66% in 2009. Asked about the latest data, You Ronghui, chairman of a private school educators' union said: "The percentage of the population in Taiwan that attends private junior high school is much higher than in neighboring countries. In Japan, that percentage is 7.3%, and in the U.S., 8.9%. In Taiwan, the percentage of private junior high school students is 14.4%."
As parents' awareness of the right to choose a suitable education for their child increases, this has made the proportion of private school students in the country increase. Parents want the best for their children, as they hope for them to become more competitive. But it is equally important to help them develop their self-confidence and a passion for learning.
