Excessive pesticide residues found in Taipei

TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Taipei City Market Administration Office announced on Wednesday (May 29) that 141 of the 1,252 fruit and vegetable products inspected in April did not meet regulatory standards

The failed products primarily originated from Yunlin County, Pingtung County, and Changhua County. The total amount of destroyed produce weighed 17,663 kilograms, 4,108 kilograms, and 4,968 kilograms, respectively.

The office suggested that the excessive pesticide residues in cruciferous vegetables such as bok choy, rapeseed, and baby bok choy might be due to increased pest activity in summer, leading to uncontrolled pesticide application.

Ensuring Food Safety
If the fruits and vegetables do not pass the inspection, the Market Administration Office said the Taipei Agricultural Products Marketing Corporation (TAPMC) would prohibit the transaction of the affected batches and suspend the auction of other supplies of the same vegetable types from the suppliers until they pass inspection.

The Market Administration Office stated that it would dispose of the non-compliant fruits and vegetables and halt their supply according to TAPMC regulations. It would report to the Agriculture and Food Agency and the local government agricultural authorities of the suppliers for guidance on the rational use of pesticides.

This measure aims to safeguard public health and ensure the integrity of the food supply chain.
