Shanghai delegation lands in Taipei amid tensions (TVBS News)
TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an (蔣萬安) confirmed on Monday (May 27) that a Shanghai delegation arrived earlier that day in Taipei, emphasizing the need for communication and exchange amidst cross-strait tensions. The delegation's arrival kicks off a four-day familiarization trip ahead of the annual Shanghai-Taipei Twin-City Forum hosted this year by Taipei.
Cross-Strait Communications Amid Tensions
Since 2010, Taipei and Shanghai have held the forum every July or August without interruption, with Taipei taking its turn to host this year.
Speaking to the media, Mayor Chiang stated that the Shanghai delegation's itinerary follows traditional practices and legal requirements approved by the Mainland Affairs Council (MAC).
Despite the tense atmosphere across the Taiwan Strait, Chiang believes that the forum, as the sole official communication mechanism between the two sides, should continue without adjustments in the level of visitation.
Preparations and Expectations
The Department of Information and Tourism Commissioner Wang Chiu-Tung (王秋冬) noted that the delegation's visit proceeds according to a plan approved by MAC, suggesting that the level of the visit has not significantly changed.
Wang revealed ongoing preparations for signing MOUs in terms of details and quantity, expressing hope that Shanghai Mayor Gong Zheng (龔正) will personally attend the forum. However, specific details remain undecided.
The Shanghai-Taipei Twin-City Forum is a testament to the enduring efforts for dialogue and cooperation between Taipei and Shanghai, even as broader political tensions loom. The anticipation around the forum and Mayor Gong Zheng's potential visit underscores the importance of such exchanges in fostering mutual understanding and collaboration.
