KAOHSIUNG (TVBS News) — Kaohsiung City's Economic Development Bureau announced on Thursday (May 23) that the city's accommodation and food service sales reached a record high of NT$92.9 billion in 2023, according to the latest data from the Ministry of Finance.

This milestone is attributed to the city hosting more than 117 concerts last year, drawing over 1.39 million attendees and generating an economic impact of NT$4.5 billion in tourism revenue.

Concerts Fuel Economic Growth

The bureau highlighted that from 2020 to 2023, sales in Kaohsiung's accommodation and food service sector surged by NT$23.3 billion, marking a 34% increase to reach NT$92.9 billion. The food service industry alone accounted for NT$76.4 billion, with the accommodation sector contributing NT$16.5 billion, both setting new records.

The city's vibrant concert scene has continued into the current year, with more than 54 concerts held from January to April, attracting over 720,000 participants and generating NT$2.3 billion in tourism revenue.

Kaohsiung's Tourism Sector Thrives

The economic boost from these events places Kaohsiung's tourism industry second only to Tainan among Taiwan's six special municipalities. The accommodation sector alone has witnessed a sales increase of over NT$6.3 billion since 2020, a growth of more than 60%. This remarkable performance underscores the city's successful strategy of leveraging cultural events to enhance its tourism and economic development.

As Kaohsiung continues to host a wide array of concerts and cultural events, the city's economic and tourism sectors are expected to maintain their upward trajectory, further solidifying its position as a key destination for domestic and international visitors.
