TAIPEI (TVBS News) — On Wednesday (May 22), President Hilda C. Heine of the Marshall Islands (馬紹爾群島共和國) declared the nation's unwavering support for Taiwan, promising to be its staunchest ally and to advocate for it on the international stage.
This announcement came during her visit to Taiwan for the inauguration of President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) and Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim (蕭美琴), marking a new chapter in the friendship between the two countries.
President Heine's visit underscores a significant milestone, celebrating 26 years of diplomatic relations between Taiwan and the Marshall Islands, based on shared democratic and freedom values. The Marshall Islands' Parliament last month passed a resolution supporting Taiwan's participation in international organizations, reaffirming the strong friendship between the two nations.
President Lai emphasized the future collaboration in areas such as women's empowerment and climate change, highlighting the deepening of their partnership.
The cooperation between Taiwan and the Marshall Islands spans various sectors, including public health, agricultural technology, and the establishment of the "Women's Entrepreneurship Microloan Revolving Fund" in 2019.
Looking ahead, President Lai expressed hope for the new government to work closely with the Marshall Islands to enhance the welfare of their peoples and to contribute to regional peace and prosperity.
He also extended his best wishes for the success of the upcoming Micronesian Games next month in the Marshall Islands, showcasing the spirit of collaboration and mutual support that defines the relationship between the two countries.
