TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan has ramped up its traffic law enforcement, introducing stringent laws and deploying new traffic cameras equipped with artificial intelligence (AI). These measures have successfully reduced the number of traffic accidents, according to recent data.
Many residents feel aggrieved after receiving traffic tickets with hefty fines and penalty points, prompting them to seek relief from city councilors or legislators. "I think the government should put themselves in the public's shoes and look at their lives. Otherwise, you can see that our traffic fines are getting higher and higher, violating the principle of proportionality," said Lin Kuo-chun, a New Taipei City councilor inundated with complaints from constituents.
As of June 2023, 470 traffic enforcement cameras have been installed across Taiwan, with plans for more. These cameras have proven effective, especially in New Taipei City, which captured 49,823 violations from January to March 2024.
However, the public has voiced concerns over unclear traffic law enforcement on different roads. Traffic police argue that numerous signs at intersections can overwhelm drivers, emphasizing the importance of adherence to the law.
Despite these grievances, the reduction in accidents underscores the effectiveness of the new measures. Chen Chia-hung, an associate professor at the Department of Distribution Management of Shu-Te University, noted the potential of AI technology to enhance enforcement further and prevent violations.
While traffic law information is available on official websites, many still feel inadequately informed. Going forward, the government must prioritize effective communication with the public to ensure compliance and safety.
