TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan experienced sporadic showers and largely cloudy skies on Monday. The Central Weather Administration (CWA) predicts that the first front of the plum rain season will arrive on Wednesday, bringing increased humidity and brief showers or thunderstorms from Tuesday afternoon.

The CWA forecasts that the primary rainfall period with generally high temperatures will span from May to July. As the El Niño year concludes, the latter half may introduce La Niña, potentially altering weather patterns.

Dr. Lin Te-en, a meteorologist at National Taiwan University, states there is an 80% chance of La Niña emerging in September, October, and November. Such conditions could bring typhoons closer to Taiwan, heightening the need for disaster preparedness.

Chen Yi-liang, Director of the CWA Weather Forecast Center, notes that rainfall over the next three months is expected to be slightly below average, which is crucial for managing potential reservoir shortages.

Former CWA Director Cheng Ming-tien has observed that recent tropical sea temperatures have reached record highs. Since last May, tropical temperatures have been consistently above average, with record-breaking highs nearly every day since last June.

Cheng warns of increasingly unprecedented climatic conditions and emphasizes the importance of not overlooking climate change, urging the public to stay informed about weather changes.
