TAIPEI (TVBS News) — National Dong Hwa University (NDHU) expressed gratitude Tuesday (April 16) on Facebook to renowned Taiwanese singer Jay Chou and his wife, Hannah Quinlivan, for their generous donation. The couple donated NT$1 million to the university, which suffered severe damage from a strong earthquake in Hualien on April 3.
The quake caused significant damage to local homes and NDHU's buildings and facilities, including a major fire in a laboratory and the destruction of 300 dorm rooms with 1,700 beds. The total loss is estimated at NT$2 billion. Many citizens have donated to help rebuild the campus.
In the post, NDHU said the school received the donation from Chou and Quinlivan on April 11. In addition to contributing to NDHU, the couple donated NT$4 million to the Chinese Christian Relief Association to provide emergency relief funds for disaster-stricken households facing hardship.
NDHU noted that Chou is a well-known singer, actor, songwriter, and producer in Taiwan. Since the release of his first album in 2000, his music has been popular among Chinese communities around the world, making him one of the most influential and famous Chinese singers in history. The university praised Chou for his commitment to public welfare and being a role model for NDHU students, even at the height of his successful career.
