NEW TAIPEI (TVBS News) — President Tsai Ing-wen inspected the newly constructed Chien Shih Camp on Monday (April 15), a key base for the Military Police in Taishan, New Taipei. She pledged continued support for the "Hsing An Project" policy and distributed bonus payments.
Accompanied by Defense Minister Chiu Kuo-cheng and National Security Council Secretary-General Wellington Koo, Tsai's visit sparked speculation about a possible transition of power. The Chien Shih Camp, home to elite Military Police units, is undergoing renovations to enhance workspaces for officers and soldiers. Tsai praised the progress of the renovation and encouraged the troops.
Tsai stated the "Hsing An Project" aims to improve living conditions at the camp, asserting that better living standards empower the military to defend the nation more effectively. With over 60 years of history, the old Chien Shih Camp had cramped living spaces and outdated facilities, necessitating the reconstruction. The project has executed 103 cases, with more planned to enhance the living environment and serve educational and training functions.
The renovation, budgeted at NT$900 million from a 2017 camp improvement fund, includes a new complex, a restaurant, a reception room, and other auxiliary facilities. The project began on Aug. 12, 2021, and was completed on Dec. 22, 2023, with units scheduled to move in on April 9. The new accommodations feature suite-style bedrooms with separate wet and dry areas and air conditioning. The restaurant's second floor also includes a combat skills hall, a judo hall, and a multi-purpose gym.
The presence of Chiu and Koo, accompanying Tsai, drew attention due to rumors of Chiu's impending departure and Koo's possible succession after the May 20 inauguration.
