TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Professor Li Cheng, founding director of the Centre on Contemporary China and the World (CCCW) at the University of Hong Kong, shared insights on political issues involving Beijing, Hong Kong, the U.S., and Taiwan with TVBS commentator Wenchi Yu on March 19.
Discussing the potential for China to launch a war against Taiwan, Professor Li emphasized that Beijing's stance on Taiwan remains unchanged. Still, he expressed concerns over perceived challenges posed by the U.S., stating, “Beijing hopes to maintain the status quo,” and highlighted actions such as Pelosi's visit to Taiwan.
Addressing issues exacerbating U.S.-China relations, Prof. Li noted structural problems in the United States. He pointed out, “China's booming middle class coincided with the decline of the middle class in the United States and the West,” suggesting that this dynamic might lead to heightened concern about China and possibly incorrect perceptions of the real situation in Hong Kong.
Regarding Hong Kong, Prof. Li praised its commitment to diversity, citing the hosting of Asia's first Gay Games in November last year as evidence. He stressed the importance of fostering internationalization and openness, stating, "Beijing's primary objective is to foster different levels of internationalization and openness to instill confidence."
Despite concerns over the new national security law, Prof. Li remained optimistic about Hong Kong's future. He highlighted opportunities for growth in the financial and innovative sectors, stating, “Hong Kong's best times are yet to come."
Looking ahead, Prof. Li called for a nuanced approach to U.S.-China relations, urging understanding and collaboration. He emphasized that China should engage in more role reversals and seek to understand the mindset of Americans.
