TAIPEI (TVBS News) — With Taiwan set to host the Asian-Pacific Parliamentarians' Union (APPU) Annual Meeting in 2025, Deputy Legislative Speaker Johnny Chiang extended an invitation on Wednesday (March 13) to MPs from member countries to participate in the event next year.
Chiang led a cross-party group of 14 lawmakers to Tokyo last Sunday to attend the APPU Annual Meeting. This marked the first time the new legislature engaged in parliamentary diplomacy.
In a press release released by the Legislative Yuan, Chiang has led the cross-party delegation, together with 10 other delegation heads and APPU Secretary-General Eiichi Suzuki, attending the APPU Closing Ceremony and jointly signing a communiqué.
During the meeting, Chiang expressed Taiwan's intention to capitalize on the discussions from the meeting. He highlighted an aim to undertake concrete actions on various issues within the Asia-Pacific region, such as climate change, economic development, and public health, and to strengthen cooperation with other countries.
The 2025 APPU conference hosted by Taiwan will mark the 11th time for the Republic of China to host the meeting. Furthermore, Papua New Guinea is set to host the conference in 2026.
