TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's Ministry of Education and the prestigious Harvard University entered into a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on Monday (March. 4), pledging a five-year collaboration starting in 2025 to sponsor five Taiwanese students annually to pursue doctoral degrees at Harvard.

According to a news release from the Ministry of Education, funding could extend up to four years.

This merger marks a milestone as Harvard becomes the 18th university ranked in the global top 100 to establish a PhD scholarship scheme, with the Ministry's collaboration.

The first such partnership was with the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom, the Ministry shared.

The Ministry heralded Harvard's global academic gravitas and hoped this collaboration would encourage Taiwan's students to study at Harvard, deepen academic exchange, and continue nurturing globally recognized leaders.

In a video conference, Nicole Lee, the acting director of the ministry's Department of International and Cross-strait Education, said that Taiwan and the U.S. have maintained steady exchanges in the educational sphere.

On average, about 3,100 American students study in Taiwan each year, while approximately 22,000 Taiwanese students study in the U.S. About 110 of them are currently enrolled at Harvard.
