DPP candidate warns against China-backed election win (TVBS News)
TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) presidential candidate Lai Ching-te issued a stark warning on Wednesday (Jan. 3), emphasizing the critical importance of preventing a China-backed candidate from winning the elections.
Lai expressed his concerns during a nationwide campaign event, highlighting his belief that Beijing's interference, channeled through the Kuomintang (KMT), is evident and unacceptable.
Lai stressed that the best way to fight back against China's alleged intervention in the elections is by not electing the candidate supported by China, as doing so would endanger Taiwan's democracy.
An opinion piece published in The Washington Post on Dec. 31, highlighted the influence of a third player, China, in Taiwan's 2024 elections. The article suggested that China has been disseminating pro-KMT content through social media to influence voters.
In response, the DPP's director of international affairs pointed out that the article implied the KMT's alignment with China and stated that China is clandestinely supporting the KMT in the elections.
