TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) stressed the significance of diplomatic allies on Thursday (Dec. 28), cautioning that comments by Taiwan People's Party presidential candidate Ko Wen-je could harm these relationships.

MOFA spokesperson Liu Yung-chien clarified that there's no conflict between strengthening ties with allies and developing relationships with non-allied nations. The foreign ministry's approach is to foster both, not prioritize based on alliance status.

Liu highlighted the crucial support from allies, facilitating Taiwan's participation in international organizations and championing its causes. He expressed gratitude for their unwavering backing and hoped misunderstandings resulting from Ko's remarks could be avoided.

In a podcast interview, Ko suggested that Taiwan's number of diplomatic allies was less crucial, emphasizing the importance of substantive relationships with nations like Japan and the U.S., despite lacking formal diplomatic ties.
