Taiwan can win international trust, says DPP‘s Hsiao (TVBS News)
TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) vice-presidential candidate Hsiao Bi-khim emphasized on Monday (Dec. 25) that despite ongoing global pressures and restrictions, she believes Taiwan can win international trust, respect, and recognition.
Speaking in Taoyuan and Hsinchu, Hsiao used the cat's sense of balance as an analogy for the diplomatic balance Taiwan needs to foster between parties in the U.S., where she served as a representative.
She added that nurturing a fair, balanced Taiwan-U.S. trade relationship is equally important.
Hsiao expressed her view that the Taiwan-U.S. relationship centers on promoting an ongoing process with Taiwan's interests at the core.
By seeking and exploiting the mutual benefits for both sides, including matters of national security, economics, and the connection with international partner relations. Taiwan's democratic freedoms can be safeguarded, she said.
When asked about comparisons between Taiwan and Israel, Hsiao pointed out there are vast differences in circumstances, strategic environment, history, and culture. However, she suggested Taiwan could learn from Israel's persistent innovations in military training.
Addressing Taiwan's extension for compulsory military service to a year from four months, Hsiao emphasized the need to extend the duration to ensure peace and build up strength.
