Tech-driven traffic enforcement expands in Taipei City (TVBS News)

TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taipei City plans to equip four additional intersections with traffic enforcement cameras starting Jan. 1 in an effort to maintain traffic order, according to the Traffic Division of the Taipei City Police Department.

The new technology aims to enforce traffic regulations such as stopping for pedestrians, obeying traffic lights, making proper turns, and adhering to traffic signal directions, Taipei City Police Department said on Tuesday (Dec. 26).

Violations detected by the equipment will be penalized under the "Road Traffic Management and Penalty Act."

Since 2019, Taipei has initiated the deployment of traffic enforcement cameras. To date, 34 areas have the equipment installed, which, according to Traffic Division's data, has resulted in a more than 90% decrease in traffic violations. The result demonstrates the effectiveness of the cameras.

The Traffic Division underscored that introducing tech-based traffic enforcement aims to reduce traffic violations and ensure smooth traffic flow, urging drivers to guard their own and others' lives and property by adhering to traffic safety rules.

The authorities hope these additional installations will contribute to safer road conditions in the city.
