TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The iconic 24-hour Eslite bookstore in Taipei's Xinyi District, a beacon of culture with over 200 million visits in 18 years, prepares for its final chapter this Sunday (Dec. 24) at 10:30 p.m. Its successor, the expansive Songyan store, is set to reopen on Jan. 20. Current renovations promise a new, larger space, continuing Eslite's legacy.
Since its inception in 2006, Eslite Xinyi has been a cultural milestone in Taiwan, boasting the largest bookstore selection on the island. Its diverse offerings range from an extensive book collection to unique experiences like cooking demos, a pioneering children's museum, and interactive murder mystery games.
At the heart of Eslite's philosophy is imagination, a concept deeply ingrained by founder Robert Wu. His vision of a bookstore goes beyond mere commerce; it's a haven for learning, dreaming, and creativity. This ethos is embodied in the store's design, particularly its eclectic reading area, adorned with 100 chairs, each with its own story, curated by designer Ray Chen.
This evening, Eslite's staff and patrons will gather to commemorate the end of an era at the Xinyi store. This event not only bids farewell to a cultural landmark but also extends an invitation to witness the rebirth of this literary icon at Eslite Songyan on Jan. 20.
