TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) vice-presidential candidate Hsiao Bi-khim emphasized the importance of strength in maintaining Taiwan's status quo and preventing bullying during a speech on Wednesday (Dec. 20).
Speaking at the December plenary of The Third Wednesday Club (San San Fe), Hsiao stressed the need for strength in dialogues to ensure the populace's confidence.
She also discussed U.S.-Taiwan relations, noting that the U.S. has consistently supported maintaining the status quo in the cross-strait situation and opposes the use of force.
Hsiao highlighted the shift in the U.S. view of China under Xi Jinping's leadership but clarified that the U.S. does not seek a new Cold War with China. She underscored Taiwan's determination to defend itself, mentioning the national defense budget and military modernization reforms.
Referring to herself as a "cat warrior," Hsiao called for government reform and maintaining a sense of balance and prudence in international affairs. Hsiao urged that Taiwan not become a divisive issue between American political parties and called for a proper balance amid U.S.-China competition.
