TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan People's Party (TPP) presidential candidate Ko Wen-je pushed back against cultural de-Sinicization on Tuesday (Dec. 12).

Speaking to the media, the former Taipei mayor expressed his opposition to removing Chinese culture from Taiwanese society, emphasizing the importance of distinguishing historical figures like Zhang Fei and Yue Fei for future generations in Taiwan.

Ko addressed this topic during a press conference on transportation policy earlier in the day, stating that completely severing contemporary society from Chinese culture is inappropriate.

He specifically mentioned revered figures in religious beliefs, including Mazu, Guan Gong, Baosheng Emperor, and The Third Prince, who primarily originate from China.

Ko also responded to a statement by Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) former legislative speaker You Si-kun, who had suggested that the concept of a "sense of honor" is an artifact of monarchic governance.

In contrast, Ko argued for the historical significance of the term, spanning over two millennia, and raised concerns about potential attacks on the DPP by a DPP "cyber army."
