Alexander Yui assumes role as Taiwan

WASHINGTON (TVBS News) — Alexander Yui, Taiwan's new envoy to the United States, arrived in Washington D.C. on Monday (Dec. 11), stepping into his diplomatic role. Ingrid Larson, managing director of the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT), welcomed him at his arrival at the airport.

Yui's appointment followed the resignation of former representative Hsiao Bi-khim on Nov. 20. The Presidential Office announced Yui as her replacement on Nov. 29, transitioning him from his previous role as Taiwan's top envoy to the EU and Belgium, which he had assumed in September.

Arriving from Brussels, Yui was greeted by Taiwanese expatriates at the airport, underscoring the significance of his new position.

Yui outlined his vision for Taiwan-U.S. relations, emphasizing security, economic cooperation, trade, and Taiwan's international standing. He set goals including promoting peace in the Taiwan Strait, strengthening defense capabilities, and advancing trade initiatives.

Amid China's ongoing pressure, Yui highlighted the need to safeguard Taiwan's election from external influence, addressing military threats, economic coercion, and cognitive warfare.

Committed to deepening Taiwan-U.S. ties, Yui pledged to build on Hsiao's work and collaborate with his embassy team. AIT Chair Laura Rosenberger shared photos of Larson welcoming Yui on social media, expressing confidence in his experience and anticipating further bilateral development.
