TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) vice-presidential candidate Hsiao Bi-khim expressed hopes for genuine peaceful intentions from Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday (Nov. 23) regarding his remarks about no plans to attack Taiwan by 2027 or 2035.
During her first 2024 presidential election international press event since returning from the United States last Sunday, Hsiao stated, "I hope President Xi's statement claiming there is no timetable for attacking Taiwan is sincere."
"We truly hope to reach the utmost agreement with China, which is maintaining the status quo of peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait," she emphasized.
Hsiao's comment followed Xi's meeting with U.S. President Joe Biden at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in San Francisco on Nov. 16.
She also mentioned seeing President Biden reiterate his support and commitment to ensuring stability in the Taiwan Strait.
The DPP vice-presidential nominee stressed the importance of strengthening Taiwan's capabilities to confidently ensure ongoing peace and stability while expressing willingness to regard any opportunity for peace with goodwill.
Meanwhile, Hsiao described herself as a "cat warrior" during her tenure as Taiwan's representative to the U.S. since 2020, highlighting the need to maintain "a delicate balance" between the two superpowers.
