TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Lung cancer has now become the most prevalent cancer in Taiwan, surpassing colorectal cancer, according to the latest 2021 statistics released by the Health Promotion Administration on Friday (Nov. 10).
The report reveals that in 2021, one person was diagnosed with cancer every four minutes and 19 seconds, totaling 121,762 new cancer cases for the year. Notably, pancreatic cancer has entered the top ten cancer list, ranking tenth.
The most common cancers in 2021 were lung cancer with 16,880 cases; colorectal cancer with 16,238 cases; breast cancer in women at 15,448 cases; liver cancer with 10,775 cases; oral cancer (including oropharynx and hypopharynx) at 8,211 cases; prostate cancer at 7,481 cases; thyroid cancer with 4,626 cases; stomach cancer at 4,060 cases; skin cancer with 3,954 cases; and pancreatic cancer at 3,190 cases.
Compared to 2020, lung and colorectal cancers have switched positions in prevalence, and pancreatic cancer has risen from twelfth to tenth place. The rankings for the other cancers remained unchanged.
In 2021, there were 63,723 new male cancer patients, with colorectal, lung, oral (including oropharynx and hypopharynx), liver, prostate, esophageal, stomach, skin, leukemia, and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma being the most common.
Among females, there were 58,039 new cases, with the most frequently diagnosed cancers being breast, lung, colorectal, thyroid, uterine, liver, ovarian, skin, stomach cancers, and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.
