TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Independent presidential candidate Terry Gou addressed the complex realities of Taiwan on Wednesday (Nov. 8), discussing the severe talent drain in the recent decade.

In a Facebook post, Gou indicated how an inadequate talent pool plummeted the competitiveness of the tourism industry, attributing the declining strength of tourism activity to high domestic traveling costs.

Gou observed that the loss of interest in domestic travel for Taiwanese residents shows a striking difference in terms of the robustness seen in neighboring countries like Thailand and Singapore.

Gou asserted Taiwan has suffered unprecedented talent losses over the past decade, with the issue aggravating due to the rooted cause of the fertility crisis in the country, which bears a transition to below-replacement fertility rates.

He further linked this issue to female employment. While women's participation in the labor market does boost the nation's workforce, it often comes at the expense of quality time spent with their families.

Responding to the global rise of hybrid work modes, Gou believes adopting remote working can help parents better balance work and family life. He urged the government to upgrade software and hardware developments to help bolster remote job positions.

On the other hand, Gou condemned the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) for its continuous failure to propose tangible strategies crucial for economic growth.

To overcome this challenge, he plans to emphasize initiating industrial upgrades to sustain Taiwan's competitiveness in export-driven industries. It is only by doing so that the stagnancy of Taiwan's low wage situation could be eased.
