Foreign Minister stresses importance of int’t support (TVBS News)
TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's Foreign Minister Joseph Wu expressed on Wednesday (Oct. 18) that it's essential for Taiwan's leading political figures to seek support from other countries when visiting abroad.
Wu's comments were made in response to recent criticisms of former president Ma Ying-jeou during a speech at New York University.
Ma had critiqued Robert O'Brien, former U.S. national security advisor, and some Americans for "weaponizing" Taiwan and turning it into a potential battleground.
Wu expressed regret over Ma's remarks, emphasizing that prominent political figures should seek international support when abroad, not criticize those who support Taiwan.
The foreign minister stressed Taiwan's need for international backing in the face of intensifying economic, political, and military pressure from China.
His message implied that former or current Taiwanese leaders should unite with supportive forces overseas rather than create discord.
