TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Taiwan Mahjong Greatest Party announced via a live stream on Wednesday (Oct. 11) that it will make its 2024 election bid with a soon-to-be-released legislative candidate list.
The political party, founded in 2022, aims to promote the use of Mahjong to enhance people's mental well-being and cognitive abilities, particularly for the elderly, Chairman Kuo Hsi said during the live stream.
Kuo advocated for the promotion of Mahjong activities among senior citizens as a way to encourage social interaction and cooperation, with the ultimate goal of strengthening national security.
Mahjong, an ancient Chinese tile-based game, enjoys immense popularity in Taiwan. Despite its popularity, Mahjong gambling is unlawful. Hence, when the Taiwan Mahjong Greatest Party was formally established and became the country's 86th party in 2022, it garnered media attention.
With only a month left before the legislative candidates open for registration (Nov. 20-24), many political parties across Taiwan are announcing their candidate lists.
