KAOHSIUNG (TVBS News) — Kaohsiung City Government's Department of Health stated Tuesday (Sept. 12) that it will impose Ultra Source a fine between NT＄40,000 and NT＄4 million according to the Act Governing Food Safety and Sanitation for mislabeling the expiration dates of the imported Brazilian eggs. The department also demanded a mandatory recall of the egg batch.
Ultra Source imported the eggs from Brazil at the end of May this year, with a shelf life of 120 days. Surprisingly, the expiry date was marked as Oct. 5, which should be Sept. 24.
On Tuesday, the Kaohsiung Department of Health and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) inspected Tai Nong Egg Products Ltd. in Kaohsiung but discovered no eggs from the imported batch. An inspection at 16 stores in the city also failed to find any of the controversial eggs.
Tai Nong admitted the mislabeling error the same day and has proactively initiated a comprehensive recall.
The Department of Health and the FDA noted that the imported eggs were still within their expiration date (Sept. 24, 2023), but the company added an extra month to the expiration date.
