TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Typhoon Saola was about 700 kilometers southwest of Cape Eluanbi as of 8 a.m. on Monday (Aug. 28), moving north-northeast at 10 kilometers per hour, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).

Currently a moderate typhoon, Typhoon Saola is expected to intensify into a severe typhoon during the afternoon. Although the projected path of the typhoon has slightly shifted south, the potential for landfall cannot be ruled out; further observation is required.

Based on the current trajectory, a sea warning for Taiwan's southeastern waters is anticipated as early as tonight. A land warning might be issued before tomorrow evening (Aug. 29).

With Typhoon Saola set to come closest to Taiwan on Wednesday and Thursday (Aug. 30 - 31), the impact will be most pronounced, particularly in the southern and eastern regions, which will experience the heaviest rainfall. It is advisable to take necessary precautions against torrential rain and large waves. The public is urged to avoid coastal and mountainous areas.

It's worth noting that another typhoon, Haikui, also formed on Monday morning. Whether it will interact with Typhoon Saola and generate the Fujiwhara effect — causing the typhoon to slow down due to its interaction with another nearby storm — remains to be observed.
