CHANGHUA (TVBS News) — Kuomintang (KMT) presidential candidate Hou Yu-ih remarked that his goal remains unchanged on Monday (Aug. 28) after business tycoon Terry Gou announced his bid for the presidential race earlier today.

During his speech, Gou called for presidential candidates Hou and Taiwan People's Party (TPP) candidate Ko Wen-je to discuss potential collaborations.

Gou claimed to have already had discussions with Hou, a claim which Hou openly acknowledged.

However, Hou chose to reserve details of the discourse, declining to comment further on the specific content of their talks.

"Terry Gou and I agreed to remain silent about our supposed talk," Hou said. "Since Gou said we had a discussion, I believe questions regarding the context and means should be directed to him."

When pressed further by the media, Hou cheerfully remarked that he was chosen as the KMT candidate.

"My bid was passed by the party's national congress; as I have accepted this mission, my attitude toward this race remains unchanged."

Hou continued, "My goal remains the same, and I have shouldered this responsibility and will continue striving forward."

With Gou's sudden participation in next year's race, many worry that this would push for an easier win for Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) candidate Lai Ching-te.

As the business tycoon continues to call for unity among the opposition parties, questions remain about whether his move would result in the opposition's loss in 2024.
