TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan People’s Party (TPP) presidential hopeful Ko Wen-je, visited the National Revolutionary Martyrs' Shrine on Wednesday (Aug. 23) to pay respects to the fallen soldiers of the 823 Artillery Battle.

Ko emphasized that the 823 Artillery Battle was not only a pivotal battle in defending Taiwan, Penghu, Kinmen, and Matsu, but it also symbolized the spirit of unity and the fight for freedom.

Ko also called for more support from the central government for Kinmen and Matsu to develop their economies, considering their relatively scarce resources and geographical constraints.

"It's crucial for Taiwan, Penghu, Kinmen, and Matsu to work together in unity," Ko reiterated.

Ko advocated for reducing tensions across the strait, increasing exchanges and dialogue, and pragmatically training the Taiwanese Armed Forces.

"Our stance remains firm, yet we maintain flexibility," Ko stated.

When questioned by the press regarding his absence in Kinmen, Ko stated that the primary focus for the day should be the commemoration of the heroes who perished in the 823 Battle.

Engaging with other presidential election contenders and seeking political publicity were not in his interest, Ko said.
