TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) announced on Tuesday (Aug. 8) the intensification of a tropical storm into the 7th typhoon of the year, named Typhoon Lan. According to the JMA forecasts, Typhoon Lan is expected to head toward Japan and is not predicted to impact Taiwan directly.

Meanwhile, Typhoon Khanun remains present, positioned approximately 1,020 kilometers northeast of Taipei at 2 a.m., and continues its north-northwest trajectory on Tuesday.

Even as Typhoon Khanun moves away from Taiwan, the island is still subject to its influence through the storm's outer periphery. This has resulted in a potent southwestern airflow, leading to locally heavy rainfall in southern Taiwan.

In areas exposed to the prevailing winds, the central and southern regions are anticipated to witness intermittent short-duration showers or thunderstorms throughout the day. Given the successive days of rainfall, avoiding unnecessary activities in mountainous areas is advisable.

Coastal areas continue to grapple with significant winds and waves. Strong gusts may affect the northern coast and southeastern regions, including Orchid Island, Green Island, and Hengchun. Residents and visitors are strongly advised against venturing near the shoreline.

In terms of temperatures, highs are expected to range between 32 to 35 degrees Celsius. Eastern Taiwan may experience temperatures of up to 36 degrees Celsius, particularly in the Hualien valley, where localized temperatures could reach as high as 38 degrees Celsius.

Taking precautions against sun exposure, applying sunscreen, and staying well-hydrated are strongly recommended to prevent heatstroke.
