TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Japan's former Prime Minister Taro Aso spoke at the "Ketagalan Forum: 2023 Indo-Pacific Security Dialogue" on Tuesday (Aug. 8), stressing the importance of preventing war in the Asia-Pacific region, particularly in the Taiwan Strait.

Aso stressed that countermeasures should be in place to deter potential conflict and urged Japan, Taiwan, the United States, and other like-minded countries to be prepared.

Aso emphasized the need for a clear demonstration of intent to adversaries, which may involve using force to maintain the security and stability of the Taiwan Strait.

He outlined three elements of deterrence, including maintaining military capability, having public support for employing force, and effectively communicating these facts to adversaries.

Additionally, Aso encouraged Taiwan to remain firm in its resolve to defend itself. He expressed hope that the new Taiwanese president, who will be elected in next year's election, will continue to uphold shared universal values and cooperate with Japan in facing external threats and challenges.
