TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Changhua County Council Speaker Hsieh Tien-lin announced his withdrawal from the Kuomintang (KMT) party on Monday (July 31), sparking discussions about business tycoon Terry Gou's potential independent run for the presidency in 2024.

Hsieh cited in-party tensions and oppression as the reasons for his decision and emphasized the need to unite against a corrupt government. He also defended his sister, Lawmaker Hsieh Yi-fong, from criticism.

Asked to comment by the media, Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an responded by stating that the KMT party has nominated New Taipei Mayor Hou Yu-ih as the presidential candidate in 2024 and expressed hopes for sustained backing for the nominee.

In response to KMT New Taipei City Council member Lin Chin-chieh's criticism of KMT's internal disarray, Chiang reassured that Hou's campaign is on track, urging continued party support and recognition. Chiang argued that Hou's campaign was progressing smoothly and called for ongoing party support.

On his Facebook, Hsieh stated that all power must be united to overthrow the ruling party. He expressed dissatisfaction with the in-party tensions and oppression sparking his decision.

Additionally, Hsieh shielded his sister, Lawmaker Hsieh Yi-fong, from criticism, saying they are independent individuals despite being family. His initiative to depart the KMT party aims to prevent giving opportunities to those with ulterior motives.
