HSINCHU (TVBS News) — Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) founder Morris Chang thanked the company's research and development (R&D) team at the unveiling of its global R&D center in Hsinchu City on Friday (July 28).
The 92-year-old founder congratulated the R&D team for their hard work over the past 30 years, adding that they finally have "a place to call home."
"The contributions of the research and development team and operations team have been immense to TSMC, the semiconductor industry, and the world's economy as a whole," Chang said. "It's all because of your great contributions that TSMC can be this highly sought-after company."
The business leader expressed hopes that with the center's establishment, TSMC will continue with its current momentum, remaining at the top of its field.
President Tsai Ing-wen was initially set to appear at the center's inauguration ceremony. However, due to her feeling unwell after contracting the COVID-19 virus, she could not make it, asking Premier Chen Chien-jen to attend instead.
The center is set to house up to 8,000 R&D team members in the future and will work toward developing 2nm and 1.4nm and smaller chips.
