KAOHSIUNG (TVBS News) — Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-mai revealed on Monday (July 17) that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSMC) planned to build a 2nm chip factory in the city.
"Earlier this year, they informed us of their intention to change their plan from building an advanced chip factory," Mayor Chen told reporters earlier that day in a visit to the training of the nation's athlete team at the National Sports Training Center in Kaohsiung.
He added that the city and central governments will "collaborate to accommodate any necessary arrangements and adjustments, which poses no problem from our end."
TSMC's original plan was to build a 28nm fab in Kaohsiung, which was postponed due to changes in demand in April. The semiconductor foundry was allegedly to upgrade the new fab to produce 2 nm chips to align with the "AI wave."
TSMC has not confirmed the news, but vehicles and trucks were seen coming in and out of the construction site. The company also planned to build fabs in Taoyuan, Taichung, and Hsinchu.
