TAIPEI (TVBS News) — In celebration of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, Wenchi Yu, commentator of the TVBS Meeting Room, conducted on Tuesday (May 30), an insightful interview with Bing Chen, the founder of Gold House.
Reflecting on the progress made in advancing Asian Pacific representation, Chen remarked, "We've transitioned from community excellence to industry excellence."
He highlighted the pivotal moments when the industry celebrated films with all-Asian casts and recognized the first non-English language film to win the Best Picture Oscar. These milestones were significant in propelling the movement forward. However, the focus is now shifting towards content quality.
The most awarded film, "Everything Everywhere All at Once," is a testament to the burgeoning Asian soft power.
Chen also mentioned that the Japanese film franchise "Pokémon" holds the distinction of being the most lucrative franchise in history, underscoring the popularity and financial success that Asian content can achieve.
Chen discussed multiple challenges faced by Asian cultural industries in content distribution. One challenge involves the economic model of streaming platforms, leading to residual payment issues. Another challenge is ensuring financial sustainability for independent creators amidst the need for multiple media formats. Additionally, preserving cultural integrity becomes vital in the face of content dilution caused by the rise of streaming platforms.
When asked about the key to his success in creating such a meaningful platform, Chen attributed it to his upbringing in a third culture. This unique perspective has empowered him to execute innovative ideas.
With pioneers like Chen leading the way, the future looks promising for Asian Pacific representation in cultural industries.
